Acer palmatum has a different presence from the palm and the giant sequoia. It does not need to dominate the garden to catch your eye. The shape of the leaves gives it a finer, quieter character.
I like having plants with contrasting shapes together. In a garden of roughly 500 square metres, there is space to let a tree have its own moment, then notice how it changes the view of the plants around it.
The Japanese maple is one of those plants you find yourself checking as the seasons shift. Its foliage gives the garden something to look forward to, and a reminder that a plant does not need to be enormous to leave an impression.
It sits among a collection that ranges from palms to rhododendrons. That mix is what makes the garden feel personal: not a single theme, but plants I find interesting enough to make room for.
Happy growing,
Matteo
