The greenhouse is only 12 square metres. That is not much room to play with, which makes every shelf, pot and sunny patch feel like it needs a job.

I like the greenhouse for the change of pace it brings to a garden full of outdoor plants. It is a place to start things off, keep an eye on tender growth and try a few vegetables alongside everything else. Tomatoes are a familiar favourite: they make the most of the covered space, and the first ripe fruit is hard to beat.

A small greenhouse also keeps the choices honest. There is no room to grow everything, so I have to decide what I most want to watch this season. The bigger garden gives me space for trees, palms and shrubs; the greenhouse is where I can focus on the smaller details.

That contrast is part of what I enjoy about the garden: one minute I am looking at a plant that could eventually tower over the house, the next I am checking a seedling in a pot.

Happy growing,
Matteo
